How to connect payments: use your own Whop account

Connect the Whop account you already have, or a free new one, with an API key. Your sales go straight into your own Whop balance. Here is what to expect, what it costs and what Whop decides.

· 6 min read

When a shopper pays on your CheckoutFlare checkout, the money goes into your own Whop account. Whop is a payments company. CheckoutFlare never holds your money and never creates a Whop account for you.

You connect your account by pasting an API key. This takes about 5 minutes.

What you need before you start

  • A Whop account. If you do not have one, sign up for free at whop.com.
  • Whop’s own verification, done in Whop. Whop needs to know who you are before it can pay you. You do this on Whop’s pages, in Whop. CheckoutFlare is not involved and never sees your ID documents or bank details.
  • A connected Shopify store. Do Connect Shopify first.

Steps

In Whop:

  1. Open whop.com/dashboard/developer.
  2. Go to Account API Keys and click Create.
  3. Name the key CheckoutFlare and choose the Admin role. This is the simplest choice. If you prefer, you can pick a custom set of permissions instead. CheckoutFlare shows you the exact list it needs.
  4. Copy the key. Whop shows it only once, so keep the window open until you have pasted it.

In CheckoutFlare:

  1. Go to Settings, then Payments.
  2. Paste the key.

CheckoutFlare checks the key, reads your Whop account name and sets up the Whop webhook for you. This takes about 2 to 3 minutes. When it is done, the badge changes to Connected.

You can use the same Whop account for several of your stores.

Testing first

For testing, you can use a key from Whop’s sandbox. Create it at sandbox.whop.com/dashboard/developer in the same way.

How you get paid

  1. The shopper pays on your checkout.
  2. Whop takes its card fee and puts the rest in your Whop balance.
  3. In Whop, you choose a bank account or other payout method and when to withdraw.

One-click upsells after payment charge the card the shopper just used. They are only offered when Whop saved that card. Refunds you make in Shopify are sent to Whop, and tracking numbers are sent to Whop too. All of this runs on your own Whop account with your key.

What Whop decides

Some things depend on Whop, not on CheckoutFlare. We cannot change them.

  • Whether your account is approved and verified. Whop makes this decision.
  • Payout speed. It depends on your country and on Whop.
  • Reserves. Whop may hold back a small part of a new account’s money for a while, to cover refunds.
  • Holds and disputes. Whop may pause payouts if it needs more information, and it handles disputes.

What it costs

Whop’s standard rates at the time of writing are:

  • 2.7% + $0.30 for each card payment.
  • Plus 1.5% for international cards.
  • Plus 1% when currencies are converted.
  • A $15 fee if a shopper disputes a payment with their bank.

These fees are charged by Whop. Rates can change, so check Whop’s fees page for the latest numbers. CheckoutFlare’s own fee is separate and is added up into one bill each month, paid on our Whop checkout page. We never save your card. See Billing and plans.

Disconnecting

You can disconnect Whop in CheckoutFlare at any time. You can also revoke the key in Whop, which stops CheckoutFlare’s access straight away.

If something goes wrong

  • The key is not accepted. Check that you copied all of it, with no spaces. If you lost it, create a new key in Whop. Whop only shows a key once.
  • The key was accepted but something is missing. If you chose a custom set of permissions, compare it with the list shown in CheckoutFlare. Or create a new key with the Admin role.
  • “We could not reach Whop”. Try again in a minute.
  • Whop will not verify you or pay you out. That is between you and Whop. Check Whop’s help pages for your country.

Keep your account safe

Treat the API key like a password. Do not share it or post it anywhere. If it leaks, revoke it in Whop and create a new one.
