Getting a shopper to your checkout costs money in ads. Once they are there, small extra offers can raise what each person spends, without paying for more traffic.
CheckoutFlare has three tools, all on one page: Upsells & offers in the left menu.
- Order bumps. A tick box right before the pay button. Example: “Yes! Add gift wrap for $2.99”.
- Post-purchase offers. A one-click offer shown right after the shopper pays. One click adds it to their order. The shopper does not type their card details again, because the offer uses the payment method they just used.
- Discount codes. Codes a shopper types at checkout.
Order bumps and post-purchase offers are Starter plan features. See Billing and plans.
What you need before you start
- Your checkout designed and published. See Design your checkout.
- An idea that fits what the shopper is buying. A phone mount fits a phone case.
- For a real product: its Shopify variant id. This is explained below.
Order bumps
An order bump is a small, easy yes. Think gift wrap, a protection plan, priority processing or a small add-on.
- Open Upsells & offers, then the Order bumps tab.
- Click New order bump (or Create your first bump).
- Fill in the form:
- Title. Shown as “Yes! Add …”. Example: “Priority processing”.
- Short description. Optional. Example: “Ships within 24 hours.”
- Price. For example 2.99.
- Compare-at price. Optional. A higher “was” price. It must be higher than the price.
- Image link. Optional. A link starting with
https://. - Shopify variant id. Fill this in only if it is a real Shopify product you want added to the Shopify order. Leave it empty for a fee or a service.
- Check the preview, which shows how it looks just above the pay button.
- Click Add order bump.
Use the switch on each row to turn a bump on or off.
The checkout must also contain the Order bumps block. It is in the editor under Add block, in the Sell more group. Most templates already have it.
Post-purchase offers
A post-purchase offer appears after the shopper pays. It is the easiest way to raise the value of each customer, because they have already decided to buy.
- Open the Post-purchase offers tab.
- Click New offer.
- Fill in the form.
- Offer name. Only you see it.
- Product name, Variant name (optional), Image link (optional).
- Shopify variant id. This is required. In Shopify, open the product, then the variant. The number at the end of the web address is the id.
- Offer price and Compare-at price (optional).
- Headline. Example: “Add a second mount for 50% off”.
- Bullet points. Up to 6 reasons to say yes.
- Badge. Optional, like “50% OFF”.
- Countdown (seconds). Optional, from 10 to 3600. 120 means 2 minutes. Only use a timer if the offer really ends.
- Under When to show it, choose After every order, or Only when the cart has certain products. For the second option, enter the Product ids, separated by commas.
- Choose what comes next. See “Build a funnel” below.
- Save.
You can click an offer in Your funnel to preview its page.
Build a funnel
A funnel is a chain of offers. You choose what the shopper sees next:
- If they say yes, next show another offer, or the thank-you page.
- If they say no, next show another offer, or the thank-you page.
For example, if a shopper says no to a $20 offer, show a cheaper $9 offer. Create the second offer first, then pick it in the list. Do not show too many offers in a row.
Discount codes
- Open the Discount codes tab.
- Click New discount code (or Create a code).
- Enter a Code, like
WELCOME10. Use letters, numbers,-and_. Codes are not case sensitive. - Choose What it does: Percentage off, Fixed amount off or Free shipping.
- Enter the Percent off (1 to 100) or the Amount off.
- Optionally set a Minimum order, a Use limit, and Starts and Ends dates.
- Keep Code is active on, and save.
To pause a code without deleting it, switch it off. The Discount code field must be on in the checkout editor’s Settings tab. Shoppers type the code in the order summary.
Tips
- Keep offers close to the main product. Relevant offers feel like help. Random ones feel like pressure.
- Be honest. Do not show a fake “was” price or a fake timer.
- Watch your refunds. If they rise, an offer may be confusing shoppers. See Refunds and disputes.
- On an order, the order page shows Order bumps and Upsells as separate lines, so you can see what each earned.
If something goes wrong
- “Enter a valid amount like 2.99”. Use numbers only, with a dot for cents.
- “Must be higher than the price”. The compare-at price must be higher than the price.
- “Add the Shopify variant id of the product you are offering”. Post-purchase offers need a variant id. Copy it from the end of the variant’s web address in Shopify.
- The bump does not show in checkout. Check that the switch is on, that the Order bumps block is in your checkout, and that you published the design.
- A code does not work. Check that it is active, that the dates are right, that the cart meets the Minimum order, and that the Use limit is not used up.
