How to set up shipping rates: zones, free shipping and delivery dates

Add shipping zones and rates in CheckoutFlare. Flat price, free over an amount, price per item or by weight, plus honest delivery dates that cut down on "where is my order" disputes.

· 5 min read

Shoppers must see a shipping price before they pay. In CheckoutFlare you set these prices yourself. They are added to what the shopper pays.

Shipping also helps you avoid disputes. When a shopper sees an honest arrival date such as “Arrives Nov 14–21”, they are less likely to ask “where is my order?” later. For dropshippers this is one of the most common reasons for chargebacks.

The dashboard estimates about 3 minutes.

Two ideas to understand

  • A zone is a group of countries that share the same shipping rates. For example “United States”, or “Rest of world”.
  • A rate is one shipping choice inside a zone, with a name, a price and a delivery time. For example “Standard shipping, $4.95, 5–9 business days”.

You must have at least one zone with at least one rate. Otherwise, shoppers cannot check out.

What you need before you start

  • Know which countries you ship to.
  • Know about how long your supplier takes. Add the time for the supplier to process the order and for the parcel to travel. If you are not sure, ask your supplier, and then add a few days.
  • Decide your prices. Check your product costs first, so shipping does not make you lose money.

Steps

Go to Settings, then Shipping.

Option A: Start with a template

If you have no zones yet, you see Start with a template. Click Use this on one of these:

  • Free worldwide shipping. One free rate for everyone. Delivery 7–14 business days.
  • US + International. A $4.95 rate for the US (5–9 business days), and a $12.95 rate for everywhere else (10–20 business days).
  • Free over $50. Free from $50, otherwise $5.95. Delivery 7–14 business days.

You can change every price afterwards. The delivery times are only examples. Change them to match your supplier.

Option B: Build your own

  1. Click Add a zone (or Add zone).
  2. Type a Zone name, like “United States”. Choose the Countries. You can search, or click a region shortcut such as European Union. Then save.
  3. In the zone, click Add a rate.
  4. Type a Rate name, like “Standard shipping”.
  5. Under How is the price worked out?, choose one:
    • One flat price. Enter the Price. Enter 0 for free shipping.
    • Free over a certain amount. Set Free when cart is at least and Otherwise charge.
    • A base price plus a price per item. Set Base price and Plus, for every item.
    • Based on the weight of the cart. Add Weight bands. Each band has “up to” some grams and a price. Carts heavier than the last band pay the last band’s price.
  6. Fill in Delivery estimate, like “7–12 business days”. Set Fastest (days) and Slowest (days). The days are business days, and they are used to show an arrival date like “Arrives Nov 14–21”. Business days skip Saturday and Sunday.
  7. Save the rate. Add more rates if you want, like a faster paid option.

Cover the whole world

If a shopper is in a country that is not in any zone, they see “We don’t ship there”. To ship everywhere else, add a zone called “Rest of world” and click the Rest of world shortcut in the country picker. The page also shows a blue note when some countries are not covered.

Test your rates

On the right side, the Test a cart card lets you check what a shopper would see. Choose Ships to, then enter Cart total, Items and Weight (g). Under Shopper sees you get the rates and arrival dates.

Tips for honest delivery times

  • If your product ships from overseas, say so. Use 7–20 days if that is the truth.
  • Do not promise 1–3 days if you cannot deliver in 1–3 days. The Store Readiness Check warns about this in your shipping policy. See Store Readiness Check.
  • Match your shipping policy page in Shopify to the days you enter here.
  • Use the Delivery estimate block in the checkout editor to show the date on the page. See Design your checkout.
  • Send tracking numbers as soon as you have them. When you fulfil an order in Shopify, we pass the tracking to Whop. See Refunds and disputes.

If something goes wrong

  • A warning says none of your zones have a rate. Add a rate to a zone. Shoppers cannot check out until you do.
  • Shoppers see “We don’t ship there”. Their country is not in a zone. Add the country, or add a “Rest of world” zone.
  • The price is wrong. Use Test a cart with the same total, items and weight to see which rate matches. Then edit the rate.
  • The weight rate gives the same price for heavy carts. Carts heavier than your last band pay the last band’s price. Add another band.
  • An arrival date looks too early. Check Fastest (days) and Slowest (days). Add the supplier’s processing time too.
  • You deleted a zone by mistake. Deleting a zone also deletes its rates. Add the zone and rates again.
